Your First Day with Claude: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Never used an AI chatbot before? This step-by-step guide walks you through your first conversation with Claude — from signing up to actually getting value.

So you keep hearing about AI and you're ready to try it. Great. Let's skip the hype and the jargon and just get you started.

This guide is for Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant — but the basics apply to any AI chatbot. By the end of this article, you'll have had your first real conversation with an AI and you'll understand why people won't stop talking about this stuff.

Step 1: Get the App (2 Minutes)

You have two options:

On your phone: Download the Claude app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). It's free.

On your computer: Go to claude.ai in your web browser. Again, free.

Create an account with your email or Google account. That's it — you're in.

Step 2: Understand What You're Looking At

When you open Claude, you'll see a simple chat interface. There's a text box at the bottom where you type, and the conversation appears above it.

That's the whole interface. There's no learning curve. If you can send a text message, you can use Claude.

Step 3: Your First Conversation

Here's where people get stuck. They open the app, stare at the empty chat, and think: "What am I supposed to ask?"

Let's fix that. Try one of these as your very first message:

If you want practical help:

"I'm hosting dinner for 6 people this Saturday. Two are vegetarian, one doesn't eat gluten. Help me plan a menu that works for everyone, with a shopping list."

If you want to learn something:

"Explain how the stock market works like I'm a smart 14-year-old. Don't dumb it down, but don't use jargon either."

If you want help with writing:

"I need to write an email to my landlord about a maintenance issue. The bathroom faucet has been leaking for two weeks. I want to be firm but polite. Here's what I want to say: [describe it in your own words]."

Type one of those, hit send, and watch what happens.

Step 4: The Conversation Continues

Here's the part that surprises most first-time users: you can keep talking.

Claude isn't a search engine. You don't get one answer and start over. You have a conversation. After Claude responds, you can:

  • Ask follow-up questions ("What if one of the guests is also allergic to nuts?")
  • Ask it to adjust ("Make the email a bit more direct")
  • Ask it to explain something ("Wait, what's a roux? I've never made one")
  • Change direction entirely ("Actually, forget dinner — help me write a birthday card")

Claude remembers everything in the current conversation. It's like talking to a very knowledgeable, very patient friend.

Step 5: Things Claude Is Great At

Now that you've had your first chat, here's a quick tour of what Claude can actually help with:

Writing Anything

Emails, letters, essays, social media posts, birthday toasts, complaint letters, thank-you notes, cover letters. Tell it the context and tone you want, and it'll draft something you can edit.

Explaining Things

Any topic, any level. Want to understand cryptocurrency? Quantum physics? Why your car makes that weird noise? Just ask, and tell Claude how technical to get.

Planning and Organizing

Trip itineraries, weekly meal plans, event schedules, project plans. Claude handles logistics better than most humans.

Brainstorming

Stuck on a gift idea, a business name, a creative project, or a solution to a problem? Claude can generate dozens of ideas and help you evaluate them.

Analyzing Text

Paste in an article, a contract, an email thread, or anything else. Ask Claude to summarize it, find the key points, or spot things you might have missed.

Step 6: Things to Know

A few important things that will save you frustration:

Claude doesn't know everything. It can be wrong, especially about very recent events or very specific facts. Always verify important claims.

Each conversation starts fresh. When you start a new chat, Claude doesn't remember your previous conversations. If you need context from before, you'll need to mention it again.

Be specific. "Help me write something" will get a generic response. "Help me write a thank-you note to my daughter's teacher for going above and beyond during a tough semester" will get something genuinely useful. Details matter.

You can paste long text. Claude can handle thousands of words. You can paste entire articles, emails, documents — and ask Claude to work with them.

There's a free limit. You can use Claude for free, but there's a daily message limit. If you find yourself using it a lot, the paid plan ($20/month) removes those limits.

Step 7: Level Up

Once you're comfortable with basic conversation, here are some next steps:

Try a soul. Visit our souls catalog and find a character to chat with. 👑Cleopatra is a great first soul — just paste the prompt and have a conversation with ancient royalty.

Play a game. Grab the 🚢Battleship prompt or the 🃏War card game and play directly in your chat.

Explore prompts. Browse our prompts catalog for ready-made conversations that do specific things — from 🛋️interior design advice to time traveler interviews.

Try This Now

If you've been reading this whole article without actually opening Claude — open it now. Seriously. Right now.

Type this as your first message:

"Hi! I'm brand new to AI. I'm a [your job/situation] and I'm curious what you can help me with. What are five things you could do for me today that would actually be useful?"

Then just have a conversation. Ask follow-ups. Push back if something isn't useful. Treat it like you're talking to a real person.

That's your first day with Claude. Tomorrow, try something different. The day after, something else. Within a week, you'll wonder how you got by without it.
