How to Talk to AI: The Art of Prompting

The difference between mediocre AI output and amazing AI output almost always comes down to one thing: how you ask. "Prompting" is just a fancy word for talking to AI effectively. Here's how to do it.

The Golden Rule

Be specific. The more context you give, the better the output.

• Bad: "Write me a bio"
• Good: "Write a professional bio for LinkedIn. I'm a marketing manager with 8 years of experience specializing in B2B SaaS. I've led teams of 5-10 people and my biggest achievement was growing organic traffic 300% in 18 months. Keep it to 150 words, third person, confident but not braggy."

The Five Elements of a Great Prompt

1. Role

Tell AI who it should be: "You are an experienced financial advisor..." "Act as a senior software engineer..." "You are a patient, encouraging writing tutor..."

2. Context

Give background information: "I'm a freelance graphic designer with 3 years of experience. I'm trying to raise my rates..."

3. Task

Be clear about what you want: "Write a professional email declining a project because the budget is too low."

4. Format

Specify how the output should look: "Format as a numbered list..." "Keep it under 200 words..." "Use headers and bullet points..." "Write it as a table comparing..."

5. Tone

Define the voice: "Professional but warm..." "Casual, like texting a friend..." "Academic and thorough..."

Advanced Techniques

Chain of Thought

Ask AI to think step by step: "Walk me through your reasoning step by step before giving a final answer."

This produces more thoughtful, accurate responses.

Examples

Show AI what you want: "Write product descriptions like this example: [paste example]. Now write one for [new product]."

Iteration

Don't expect perfection on the first try. Refine: - "Make it shorter" - "More casual tone" - "Add specific numbers" - "Less jargon"

Constraints

Tell AI what NOT to do: "Don't use buzzwords. No cliches. Don't start with 'In today's fast-paced world.'"

Common Prompting Mistakes

Too Vague

"Help me with my business" — Help with what, specifically?

Too Long

A prompt shouldn't be an essay. Include relevant context, but trim the fluff.

No Format Specification

If you want a list, say so. If you want a paragraph, say so. If you want a table, say so. Don't leave the format to chance.

Not Iterating
