How a Retiree Discovered AI and Fell in Love

The story of a 68-year-old retiree who went from AI skeptic to daily user, and the surprisingly practical ways he uses it.

"I Thought It Was Just for Tech People"

Frank retired from teaching history three years ago. He thought AI was science fiction — something for Silicon Valley engineers and teenagers on TikTok. His granddaughter showed him ChatGPT last Thanksgiving, and his exact words were "but what would I use it for?"

Six months later, Frank uses AI every single day. Here is what changed.

The Gateway: Travel Planning

Frank and his wife planned a trip to Portugal. He started Googling and got overwhelmed by blog posts that were clearly written for people half his age. Backpacker hostels. Party districts. Instagram spots.

His granddaughter suggested asking AI instead: "We are a couple in our late 60s planning two weeks in Portugal. We like history, local food, wine, and walking but not hiking. We prefer comfortable hotels to hostels. We do not want tourist traps. Plan a relaxed itinerary with realistic daily walking distances."

The AI gave him a day-by-day itinerary that was perfect. It suggested neighborhoods for their interests, recommended restaurants with table service instead of trendy places with communal seating, and noted which historic sites had accessibility features.

Frank was hooked.

Daily Use: The Knowledge Companion

Now Frank uses AI for things he never expected:

Gardening. "My tomato plants have yellow leaves on the bottom but healthy growth on top. I am in Zone 6, planted in raised beds, water every other day. What is wrong and what should I do?" He gets specific, actionable advice instead of generic articles.

Cooking. "I have leftover roast chicken, half a bag of spinach, and some feta cheese. What can I make for dinner tonight? I do not want anything complicated." Dinner solved in 30 seconds.

Health questions. "My doctor prescribed metformin. Explain what it does, common side effects, and any foods I should avoid while taking it." He still trusts his doctor, but understanding his medications makes him a better patient.

Home repair. "My bathroom faucet drips. It is a single-handle Moen from about 2010. Walk me through fixing it step by step, with the tools I will need." Better than watching a 20-minute YouTube video to find 2 minutes of useful information.

Family history. As a retired history teacher, Frank is now researching his family genealogy. AI helps him understand historical context, interpret old documents, and identify research strategies.

What Surprised Him Most

"It is patient," Frank says. "I can ask the same question three different ways and it does not get frustrated. I can say 'explain that more simply' and it actually does. Try that with Google."

He also appreciates that he can have a conversation. Start with a question, follow up, go deeper, change direction. The back-and-forth feels natural in a way that searching the internet never did.

His Advice for Other Retirees

"Just try it. Ask it something you are curious about. It does not bite." Frank recommends starting with something practical — a recipe, a home repair question, travel planning — rather than something abstract.
