In 1966, a computer scientist at MIT named Joseph Weizenbaum created ELIZA, a program that simulated a psychotherapist by rephrasing the user's statements as questions. "I feel sad" would produce "Why do you feel sad?" It was a parlor trick -- a few dozen pattern-matching rules dressed in therapeutic language. Weizenbaum was horrified when his secretary asked him to leave the room so she could have a private conversation with it.
That moment -- a human treating a simple text-matching program as a confidant -- captures something essential about the relationship between people and conversational AI. The technology was primitive. The human response was profound. And the gap between what the machine could actually do and what people wanted it to do would define the next sixty years of chatbot development.
