Two Ways to Extend AI

Both ChatGPT plugins (now called GPTs and Actions) and MCP servers solve the same problem: giving AI assistants the ability to do things beyond conversation. But they work very differently, and those differences matter.

ChatGPT's Approach: GPTs and Actions

OpenAI's approach centers on GPTs — custom versions of ChatGPT with specific instructions and capabilities. GPTs can use Actions, which connect to external APIs.

How it works:
1. A developer builds a GPT with custom instructions
2. They optionally connect it to external APIs via Actions
3. Users find and use GPTs from the GPT Store
4. Everything runs through OpenAI's servers

Pros:
- Easy to use — just open a GPT and start chatting
- No installation required
- GPT Store makes discovery simple
- Works on mobile and desktop

Cons:
- Locked to ChatGPT — doesn't work with Claude, Cursor, or other apps
- Data goes through OpenAI's servers (privacy concern for sensitive data)
- Limited to what the GPT creator configured

MCP's Approach: Open Protocol

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that works across AI apps. MCP servers are tools that any compatible AI can use.

How it works:
1. You install an MCP server (usually one command)
2. You add it to your AI app's configuration
3. Your AI automatically discovers what the server can do
4. The server runs locally on your machine or on a remote endpoint

Pros:
- Works across apps — Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, ChatGPT (now supported)

Cons:

When to Use What

Use ChatGPT GPTs when:
- You want zero setup
- You're using ChatGPT exclusively
- The task is self-contained (a single GPT handles it)

- Data sensitivity is low

Use MCP servers when:

- Data privacy matters (local processing)
- You want to combine multiple tools
- You need deep customization

The Convergence

The lines are blurring. ChatGPT now supports MCP servers. Claude supports both its native MCP integration and web-based tools. The trend is toward MCP as the universal standard, with app-specific features layered on top.
