AI Wrappers vs Native AI Features: What Is Worth Paying For?

Understanding the difference between apps that wrap AI APIs and tools with genuinely native AI features.

Not All AI Apps Are Created Equal

The AI gold rush has produced two types of products: tools with genuinely innovative AI features, and "wrappers" that put a pretty interface on top of someone else's AI API. Knowing the difference saves you money.

What Is an AI Wrapper?

An AI wrapper is an app that takes an AI model's API (usually OpenAI or Anthropic) and adds a user interface on top. The AI itself is not different from what you would get by using the API directly.

Common wrapper patterns:
- ChatGPT with a nicer interface and templates
- "AI writing tools" that send your text to GPT-4 and return the result
- "AI coding assistants" that paste your code into an API call
- Marketing tools that generate social media posts using the same AI you could access directly

Not inherently bad. Some wrappers add genuine value through excellent UX, useful templates, team features, or workflow integrations. The problem is when they charge premium prices for minimal added value.

What Are Native AI Features?

Native AI features are built into the product's core functionality. The AI is not just answering questions — it is integrated into the product's workflow in ways you could not easily replicate with an API call.

Examples of genuine native AI:
- Cursor's codebase-aware autocomplete (understands your entire project)
- Notion AI's workspace-wide knowledge (references your actual pages)
- Figma's AI design features (works within the design tool's constraints)
- Grammarly's contextual writing suggestions (understands document type and audience)

How to Tell the Difference

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Could I get the same result by pasting into ChatGPT? If yes, it is probably a wrapper.
  2. Does the AI use data from within the product? If it only processes what you give it in the moment, it might be a wrapper.
  3. Is the AI integrated into the workflow or bolted on? Seamless integration suggests native features.
  4. What would happen if the underlying AI API disappeared? If the product would have nothing to offer, it is a wrapper.

When Wrappers Are Worth It

  • The interface genuinely saves you time
  • Team collaboration features are important to you
  • The templates and presets match your specific workflow
  • You are not technical enough to use APIs directly
  • The price is reasonable for the convenience

When to Skip Them

  • The price is more than 3x the raw API cost for similar usage
  • You could build the same thing with a simple prompt
  • The "AI features" are just a chat interface
  • There is no meaningful data integration or workflow enhancement
