10 AI Prompts for Creative Writing
Whether you're writing fiction, poetry, or just for fun, these prompts help Claude spark your creativity without taking over.
AI Doesn't Replace Your Voice — It Amplifies It
The best creative writing prompts don't ask AI to write for you. They ask AI to help you think differently, break through blocks, and explore ideas you wouldn't have found alone.
Here are ten prompts that work for writers at any level.
1. The Story Starter
Prompt: "Give me the opening paragraph of a story about [vague concept: a locked door, a forgotten letter, a wrong number]. Make it intriguing but don't resolve anything."
Read Claude's opener, then continue the story yourself. You'll be surprised where your imagination takes it.
2. The Character Interview
Prompt: "Interview my character as if you're a journalist. Their name is [name], they [brief description]. Ask them 10 questions that reveal their personality, fears, and desires."
Answer the questions in your character's voice. By the end, you'll know them deeply.
3. The Setting Builder
Prompt: "Describe a [type of place: abandoned library, busy train station, quiet beach at dawn] using all five senses. Make it vivid enough to step into."
Use Claude's description as a writing exercise: rewrite it in your own style, or use it as the setting for a scene.
4. The Plot Twist Generator
Prompt: "I'm writing a story where [brief plot summary]. Give me 5 unexpected plot twists I haven't considered. At least one should be subtle and character-driven."
You don't have to use any of them. But one will probably spark something.
5. The Dialogue Coach
Prompt: "Write a dialogue between two characters: [character A] and [character B]. They're arguing about [topic] but neither one is entirely wrong. Make it feel real, not scripted."
Study how Claude handles conflict in dialogue. Then rewrite the scene in your characters' actual voices.

6. The Poetry Prompt
Prompt: "Give me a poetry prompt that involves [theme: seasons changing, losing something small, a sound you hear at night]. Include a specific form suggestion (haiku, sonnet, free verse) and one constraint."
Constraints make poetry better. "Write about rain, but never use the word 'water'" forces creativity.
7. The Perspective Flip
Prompt: "Retell [a familiar story or everyday event] from the perspective of [an unusual narrator: the villain, an inanimate object, a pet]."
A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood from the wolf's perspective? A wedding from the perspective of the cake? This prompt unlocks creative angles.
8. The Emotion Excavator
Prompt: "Help me write about [emotion: grief, joy, jealousy, wonder] without ever naming it directly. Show it through actions, details, and sensory description."
Show-don't-tell is the oldest writing advice. This prompt forces you to practice it.
9. The Flash Fiction Challenge
Prompt: "Give me a flash fiction challenge: a genre, a setting, a character, and a word limit. Make the constraints specific and unusual."
Claude might say: "Romantic comedy, set in a hardware store, protagonist is a retired astronaut, 500 words max." Go.
10. The Feedback Partner
Prompt: "I'm going to share a piece of writing. Give me honest feedback on [specific area: pacing, dialogue, imagery, structure]. Be constructive — tell me what works and what could be stronger."
Use the Filesystem server to share longer pieces directly from your files.
Write Every Day
These prompts are starting points, not finished products. The goal is to get words on the page. Some will be good. Some won't. That's how writing works.
Use the Memory server so Claude remembers your projects and preferences across sessions. Your AI writing partner should know your style.
Now stop reading about writing and go write something.
