Filesystem MCP Server

Your "Documents" folder has sixteen years of accumulated stuff in it. There's a folder called "new folder (3)" from a laptop you don't own anymore. There are forty-one PDFs named scan0001.pdf through scan0041.pdf. There's a receipt from an oil change in 2019 that you kept for reasons you no longer remember. You have googled "how to organize my computer" and given up.

The MCP Filesystem Server lets you point Claude at a folder — just one folder, one you choose — and say, "here, look. Help me." It's the official filesystem connector from the team at Anthropic. With it, your AI can read the files in that folder, rename them, move them, summarize them, or sort them into a structure that finally makes sense to you.

The key word is scoped. You don't hand your AI the keys to your whole machine. You give it access to one specific folder — "Desktop," say, or "Documents/Taxes," or "Scans To Sort." It cannot see anything outside that folder. It cannot touch your system files. It reads and writes only what you explicitly pointed it at, and you can revoke that access by editing one line of config.

Once it's installed, the conversations feel almost mundane. "Look at everything in this folder and tell me what's here." "Rename these scans using the dates on them." "Make a folder for each year and move the receipts in." "Find the duplicates." "Read these three letters and summarize what each one is asking me to do."

The install is a single JSON block in Claude Desktop's config. The path you put in that block is the only place on your computer the server can reach. Safety is built in by design.
