Voice and SMS are the oldest channels on the internet and the ones AI agents are worst at. Building an agent that can pick up a phone call, understand what the caller wants, route them, hang up gracefully, and also send a text follow-up — that's a lot of plumbing before you even get to the model.

@telnyx/ai-agent-lib is Telnyx's published npm library for building AI agents that ride on top of Telnyx's communication infrastructure. Telnyx is a telecom carrier with programmable voice, messaging, and number provisioning APIs, and this package is the building-block layer for wiring an AI agent into those channels. If you've ever called a company's support line and gotten a voice bot that actually worked, this is the category of tool that made it possible.

It's aimed at developers building agents that live in the phone system — voice bots, SMS assistants, hybrid systems that move a caller between channels mid-conversation. If your agent only needs to live in a web chat window, you probably don't need this. If it needs to answer a real phone number, pick up, speak, listen, and maybe pass to a human, this is the kind of package you reach for.

Because it's Telnyx-published, it assumes a Telnyx account, Telnyx numbers, and the Telnyx API underneath. Don't expect it to be a neutral abstraction over every carrier — it's the SDK for one specific stack.
